Mika
The Hanging GirlMika is Morten’s partner and Hardy Henningsen’s mental coach and physiotherapist. As Hardy’s care shifts into a broader network, Mika’s work helps sustain his daily life; during a pivotal scene, Mika also assists him in calling June Habersaat.
Role in Hardy’s Care
After public care services were arranged, Morten became Hardy’s day-to-day caretaker, while Mika took on the roles of mental coach and physiotherapist. Municipal home caretakers provided relief, and a wheelchair gave Hardy a way to leave the bed rest that had confined him for years. The change in care also altered Carl Mørck’s place in Hardy’s life: their long conversations had become less frequent, leaving Carl wondering whether the new arrangements were best for his friend.
Assistance and Communication
Hardy’s movement remained extremely limited, but he had some use of his thumb and a little movement in his wrist and neck. When a song by Joni Mitchell prompted Hardy to recognize the singer, he asked Mika for help. Mika’s assistance was practical and precise: at Hardy’s direction, Mika dialed June Habersaat’s number, held a cellphone five centimeters from Hardy’s ear, and prepared to move it toward his mouth.
Significance in the Scene
Mika enables Hardy to act where his physical limitations would otherwise obstruct him. The call is not simply a task performed on Hardy’s behalf: Mika positions the phone so Hardy can take part in reaching June himself. In this small scene, Mika’s care connects physical assistance with Hardy’s effort to communicate.
